The name comes from Khoikhoi word for a zebra and is a onomatopoeic, being said to resemble the Quagga's call. The Quagga was originally classified as an individual species. The Quagga was the first extinct species to have its DNA studied. The quagga was hunted to extinction for meat, hides and preserve feeds for domesticated stock.
